Son La has prospered as a logical transit point between Hanoi and Dien Bien Phu. It’s not a must-see destination, but the surrounding scenery is impressive, and there are a few interesting diversions.

  • Sights & Activitie :You’ll find woman shoulder bags, scarves, silver buttons and necklaces, and other hill-tribe crafts at Son La’s market.
  • Old French Prison & Museum ( admission : 30,000 VND; 7-11am&1-4pm).
  • Lookout Tower : For an overview of Son La, follow the stone steps to the left of the Trade Union Hotel. Look forward to a 20-mins walk to reach the lookout.
  • Thuan Chau Craft Market : is about 35 km northwest of Son La. Take a local bus or taxi motorbike(xe om) here early in the morning, when its daily market is full of colourful hill-tribe women.
  • Sleeping :Sao Xanh Hotel – Quyet Thang street (250,000-320,000 VND/tw/d); Hanoi Hotel(40$-50$)- Truong Chinh street.
  • Eating& Drinking : Long Phuong restaurant , Thinh Doi District  (40,000-70,000 VND/meals); Trung Nguyen Cafe , Quyet Thang District, near Sao Xanh hotel.
  • Moc Chau also produces some of Vietnam ‘s best tea, and the surrounding area is home to ethnic minorities, including Green Hmong, Dzao, Thai, Muong.
  • Yen Chau district is known for its abundant fruit production. Apart from bananas, all fruits grown here seasonal.
