Dien Bien Phu plays a star role in Vietnam’s modern history. It was in the surrounding countryside here, on 7 May 1954, that the French colonial forces were defeated by the Viet Minh in a decisive battle, and the days of their Indochina empire became numbered
Dien Bien Phu museum ( admission : 15,000 VND;7-11am&1.30-4.30pm).This well-laid-out museaum, contained in a space-agey modern strucure.
A1 Hill (admission : 5,000 VND;7-11am&1.30-4.30pm). There are tanks and a monument to Viet Minh casualties on this former French position.
Bunker of Colonel de Castries (admission : 5,000 VND; 7-11am&1.30-5pm) Across the Ron River, the command bunker of Colonel Christain de Castries has been recreated.
Dien Bien Phu Cemetery. The immaculately maintained Dien Bien Phu Cemetery commemorates the Vietnamese dead.
French War Memorial. The formal French War Memorial, erected on the 30th anniversary of the 1954 battle.
Muong Thanh Bridge. The old Muong Thanh bridge is preserved and closed to four-wheeled traffic.
Bunker of Chief Artillery Commander Pirot. Though not much more than an overgrown crater.

Bia Hoi – Hoang Van Thai street meals : 30,000-50,000 VND;noon-10 pm) You’re probably only in town for a night so meet the local at the bia hoi gardens.
The coffee shop – Tran Can street; 10 am -10 pm. One of a row of modern cafes on this street.
